As part of its Green x2 (St. Patty's Day + Energy Week) celebration on March 15, Holland WEST hosted a screening of Kilowatt Ours, an energy conservation and renewable energy film. I watched the film and stuck around for the discussion afterward, and heard how many local companies are involved in energy efficiency, wind, and solar power.
One point of the discussion was that America doesn't necessarily need to replace all it's fossil-fuel based electricity generation with alternative sources; it can reduce its consumption of electricity so we don't need to create as much electricity in the first place.
Another short (20-minute) film about consumption and consumerism was recommended: The Story of Stuff. I don't agree with the whole thing, especially the part about technology changing solely due to planned obsolescence. Science legitimately produces new technology and products that have improved our quality of life. Still, there are some points about consumerism that are worth considering.
